The Vertical Tides re-clads the commercial frontage of a main building in a fashion industry park in Qingdao, only one road away from the sea and overlooking the shore. The 150-metre-long, one-storey façade links a designer hotel on one side of the park with an office building that hosts fashion launches; the aim was to tie the seemingly unrelated elements of fashion, ocean and commerce together through artistic means.
Small as the brief was, the design was approached at the scale of the city. During fashion events the long, narrow façade works as a link between venues, so the walking experience matters more than the shopfronts themselves. In place of the original painted wall, the project offers a stronger visual presence for the shops and a richer artistic setting for the events.
Tides, wind and the changing light give the sea endless forms. The design translates this fascination into architecture, turning an ordinary commercial façade into a solidified sculpture. Parametric tools were used to analyse breaking-wave surfaces into geometric patterns, expressed as self-similar arcs; extensive tests on panel size and depth balanced cost against the sculptural effect, and the building's inner and outer corners were carefully subdivided so the curves flow across the façade as one system. The result is a second skin with body and depth: its louvres let the original wall and its functions show through, much as fabric relates to the body beneath — answering the project's role as a setting for fashion.
