Founded in 2009, Atelier Alter Architects is a pioneering inter-disciplinary practice based in New York and Beijing.

Atelier Alter Architects focuses intensely upon culture facilities ever since the beginning of the practice. Atelier Alter Architects won the competitions to build Qujing Culture Center in 2009, by transferring the metaphysical context of the site into an artistic yet tangible urban space of historic remembrance. The Senior Culture Center won by Atelier Alter Architects in 2010 and completed in 2014, exploded the typological transformation of bamboo bungalow into public facility. Projects by Atelier Alter Architects have been published and featured by press of different parts of the world, including Domus, WA, A+A, Russian Design Hub, I’Arca International, Cooper Publishing, HKPIP, il Nuovo Cantiere, Landscape Design, Archdaily, Designboom, among others.

Besides culture projects, the portfolio of Atelier Alter Architects ranges from small scale furniture design to educational facilities and large urban scale projects. Whether it is architecture, landscape or urban project, the works of Atelier Alter Architects strive for manifesting ideas that speak about humanity, ideas offering critic rather than imitation.

Noted for designing from critical analysis of the site, Atelier Alter Architects has been recognized by numerous awards, including Best of the Year Award 2019, 2019 Italian A 'Award, SARA National Award of Excellence 2016 , French GPDP international Design Award 2019, Lux Leading Design Award 2018，AIA Shanghai Design Award 2018，German Design Award 2019. Two partners were awarded as PERSPECTIVE magazine 40 under 40.

Outside architectural practice, our theoretical studies focus on the architecture behind the ancient silk road arts and crafts, and how the interdisciplinary nature of the silk road heritage influenced architecture and urban design. Atelier Alter Architects has participated in the joint exhibition "The Factory of Urban Life" in Seoul, South Korea in 2018, the art and architecture exhibition "One Letter to the Mayor" in New York in 2017, the urban experiment exhibition "Lifestyle" in Kassel University in Germany in 2017, and the urban architecture exhibition "The Different Topia of Chinese Calligraphy" at the Himalaya Museum in Shanghai in 2016. Atelier Alter Architects has been invited to participate in important exhibitions and urban cultural events for many times. In addition to participating in the Shenzhen Biennale and Pingshan Art Museum, Atelier Alter Architects's art works have also been permanently collected by Himalayas Art Museum.
