Surrounded by the Western Hills of Beijing, WuliEpoch Culture Center treats architecture, landscape and interior as a single triptych. A continuous path spirals up from outside to inside, drawing the distant landscape into the building in a dynamic rather than static way, so that the “first nature” of the hills and the “second nature” of the interior join seamlessly. Along this rising route the experience takes on an almost ceremonial quality — a way of paying homage to nature.

On a triangular site, the building answers the boundary with stacked layers of curved walls, laid along the ground or suspended in the air, crossing one another to form a sequence of courtyards. In dialogue with Beijing's courtyard houses and the nearby Great Wall, carefully proportioned masonry is used throughout landscape, architecture and interior, giving the project a uniform tone and a sense of historic gravity. The programme includes a 1,500 m² community space and a 400 m² skating rink.

Nature is interpreted in three ways. Inside, the “autumn foliage of the Western Hills” is rendered digitally as a field of shimmering wood-laminated ceiling panels that shift from warm yellow to white between entrance and rink, their curving arrays forming an “inverted Western Hills”. Recycled concrete blocks, sliced thin, are assembled into curving hills and waterfalls under daylight and artificial light — nature solidified and abstracted, inviting reflection on the transient and the permanent. And the distant landscape, brought in through movement, becomes part of the living space.
