Set in Liangxiang, a satellite city of Beijing, the BIT Sports Center and the neighbouring stadium together frame the entrance to the new Beijing Institute of Technology campus. The 15,692 m² building adds a 3,000-seat basketball arena, a 10-lane swimming pool, a gymnasium, a martial-arts hall and rooms for boxing, taekwondo and table tennis.

For a university rooted in military science, the design continues Leonardo da Vinci's dialogue between science, architecture and art. Drawing on Da Vinci's flying machine and on the trajectory parabola used in ballistics, two sets of parametric surfaces are suspended in the air as the roof. The volume between them is built as a space frame, clad in standing-seam aluminium above and an aluminium curtain-wall system below. The same metal wraps roof, cantilevers and façade, giving the building a uniform tone that echoes the industrial aesthetic of the school.

Inspired by the Renaissance ideal of training body and mind together, the center is conceived as a “multidimensional open campus”. The basketball hall opens to the main street and the pool to the central campus square; with the arena seating lifted one level, the ground floor becomes a continuous, permeable plane from street to campus. An enclosed promenade between pool and arena reconnects the north and south campuses, while training rooms on the upper floors look into the pool and share its skylight, nesting programmes within one another in section.
