Over decades of quarrying, the Yingliang Stone Group uncovered a large collection of fossils and decided to bring a natural history museum into its headquarters building in Fujian. The 2,600 m² renovation faced two challenges: separating a private office from a public museum within one building, and protecting the already scarce daylight that reached the offices through the central atrium.

The answer came from the stone itself. Ancient rock first formed as crystals deep within the continental crust, so the architects introduced three intersecting crystalline volumes into the atrium. Their pyramid-shaped light wells carry daylight from the roof down to the ground-floor museum hall, while their tilted outer surfaces reflect light into the surrounding offices. Horizontal crystals grow from and through the vertical ones to form fossil galleries arranged along the exhibition's timeline, drawing daylight in from the façade.

The orthogonal grid of columns and slabs now appears pierced by floating, luminous solids — an anti-gravity space, almost from a science-fiction film, where crystals of stone converse with fossils across time. Walls are the only element: inside they form the museum's calm, cave-like ceiling; outside they act as light shelves for the offices and divide public from private. Because the tilted planes could not be described in a two-dimensional grid, the team documented the design in three-dimensional coordinates and set it out on site with a total station. The museum was selected by Tadao Ando for Domus's 2021 issue on light.

英良石材集团在多年石材开采中发现并保护了大量化石，希望在集团总部办公楼中引入一座博物馆，展示化石的历史与研究化石的自然科学。改造面临两大挑战：如何区隔又连接内部办公与公共展览；原办公区主要依靠中庭采光，博物馆的介入会让采光更加紧张。

设计从石材最原始的形态——晶体结构中获得建筑语言：中庭引入三个相互穿插的锥形晶体，筒内天光直达一层博物馆大堂，倾斜的外表面把光反射进四周办公室；横向晶体与之生长穿插，形成按时间线展开的化石展厅，并把立面光线引入室内。

整个空间只用墙壁一种元素：内侧是平静冷峻、洞穴般的博物馆天花，外侧是办公楼层的反光板。倾斜墙面以三维坐标标注、全站仪现场放样精确建成。项目被安藤忠雄选入 Domus 2021 以光为主题的专刊。
